Improving roads

One issue that has been on our radar for a while now is the current system for inter-parish travel. As you can see in the image above, the current system generates a tangle of smaller roads, making it hard to see what's going on.

The goal of the upcoming update is to remedy this birds nest and at the same time fix some old bugs with travel inside a parish that have been present since the first release of the game.

If you have ever sent reinforcement to a fortification that sits in the same parish as your estate, you might have noticed that they take an unreasonable amount of time to reach their destination, this behavior will also be fixed.

The system for roads that travel through two or more parishes works just as intended and will stay as is, the update only concerns itself with roads and travel where the source and destination both sit in the same parish.

Re-generation of roads

With this update we have debated on how to best apply the fix on the current version of the game. If we only had to concern ourselves with a new season, where there are no roads present, the update works out of the box and we don't have to concern ourselves with existing roads.

But as we intend to apply this fix to the current season, we have to consider how to handle existing roads.

The approach that we eventually decided on is essentially the brute force version. We simply remove all non-upgraded roads that fit the inter-parish requirement (so no cross parish roads) and remove them completely. As soon as caravans and troop movement start moving again, the new road system will re-generate the roads using the new system instead.

We realize that this could feel intrusive and that is why we wanted to write about it before applying the update.

To be clear, nothing will break, caravans will still fetch resources and troops will still move where they should. The only consequence is that first travel after the patch is applied that will take slightly longer to complete before the new road is formed.

We estimate that most connections will have been repaired before most players even notice the change due to automated caravans however.

This update will be released later today (2026-09-17) and if you find any bug or strange behaviour after the change, please let us know via the in-game bug reporter.

The goal here is to have the parishes feel and look cleaner and not like the messy interstate 8-lane highway that is currently generated.
